Escape the Crowds! Find all the Space, Fresh Air and Nature you could wish for.
The far North of Sweden (Norrbottens) has a population of around 250,000 spread across its 98,000 sq km of land. Of these 250,000 residents, around 150,000 live in the three city areas well to the South of us.
Comparing this to England, for example, which has an area of 130,000 sq km and a population of 56, 000, 000 you can see how easy it is to find all the space you need and to avoid crowds.
If you are looking for an element of isolation and safety, both our apartments have their own private entrance and feature fully-equipped kitchens, private bathrooms, wi-fi, countryside views and easy access to the riverside footpath. Any tours and activitites will be exclusively for your group.
So, once travel here is possible and permitted again from wherever you are, please do just get in touch and come and experience Swedish Lapland for yourself.

Experience the Wonders of Swedish Lapland
Have you ever dreamed of seeing the Northern Lights, experiencing a sled ride across a frozen lake pulled by a team of huskies, being in a beautiful silent snow covered forest, visiting Santa in Lapland, fishing for Salmon under the Midnight Sun or marvelling at mile after mile of the stunning Autumn colours of the world’s biggest forest, but thought it just wasn’t possible or safe or practical?
Well, these treats, and many others can now be enjoyed by anyone with additional needs or disabilities, their family members and companions and, of course, non-disabled guests too, at The Friendly Moose Guesthouse in the heart of Lapland in the far North of Sweden.
A great programme of activities is included in your holiday and these are adapted to be as accessible as possible and tailored to best meet your specific needs and requests. Paul & Maria will also provide personal guiding and assistance on all activities and experiences so you will always have extra help and support, if needed. The small group nature of the holidays and Paul and Maria’s experience also makes it ideal for guests who may need a more adaptable, flexible, understanding and patient approach.
Airport transfers and transport to all activities and excursions in a wheelchair-adapted mini-bus is provided and we have small “skis” that can be attached to wheelchair front casters to help with movement over snow if/when required and you will be able to get around even in the winter.
If interested in booking a holiday, please contact us directly to discuss availability and other details, then book your flights (see Useful info page for help) or you can book through www.disabledholidays.com and they can arrange flights as well.
Please note that outside of the busy Autumn and Winter seasons, we also offer an accommodation-only option for bookings as well.
Paul and Maria will be your friendly and welcoming English-speaking hosts, and will be on hand to provide support and guiding, as needed, throughout your holiday.
We have 2 very friendly Labradoodles who live with us, but they do not go in any of the guest accommodation areas.
The fully equipped self-catering accommodation is adapted for wheelchair users, with a range of additional items available to assist with guest’s comfort and convenience.
Because group sizes for activities will always be small, we can take our time and adapt the activities and schedules to fit your needs. For example, when we visit Eva-Maria and Jacob for the Husky sled ride, your party will be the only people there. No queues, no rushing, no pressure. Spend time with the dogs, savour the scenery and enjoy the ride when ready.
Lovely accommodation to suit everyone

An experience I will never forget…
What a magical, beautiful holiday we had at The Friendly Moose. An experience I will never forget. Paul & Maria were excellent hosts, making us feel very welcome and at home in a relaxed friendly environment. Nothing was too much trouble, and they catered for all our needs. You can be as active or relaxed as you want here. We enjoyed snowmobiling, husky dog sledding, tobogganing,...
Amazing week at The Friendly Moose!
I had the most amazing week at ‘The Friendly Moose’. From the breathtaking views of endless snow, to the stunning sunrises, to the magical husky ride, I didn’t stop smiling the whole week. Looking out the window it felt as though I was inside a snow globe! Such a surreal experience. The way Paul and Maria put their heart and soul into it makes...
How The Friendly Moose Came To Be.
“We absolutely love it here in the friendly Swedish community of Övertorneå, in the heart of the Lapland region and are so happy to be sharing our passion for this region with our guests. A lot of people ask how we came to be here, so we thought it might be good to share our story. We both had really enjoyable jobs, working with lovely people in beautiful Cornwall, but had, as many of us do, that little voice nagging away inside that told us that maybe there was something else for us to do in life before it was too late. With my working background being in tennis and specializing in disability tennis and Maria’s background being in the hotel and caring professions we wanted to create a venture that could somehow make use of our skills, experiences and qualities and give us the exciting new challenges and lifestyle we craved. Thinking caps were on.
I, Paul, had visited Scandinavia many times before for winter-time solo snow adventure trips and had already had the dream of living here for many years, but obviously any possible move like this would need to be a family decision and so back in late May of 2018 we took an exploratory family holiday to Sweden, sadly minus our eldest daughter, Chloe-Ann, who was busy studying away at University. Thankfully, both of us and our youngest daughter, Lilly-Fe, fell in love with the place. The forests, the river, the space, the wildlife, the fresh air, the amazing light, the friendliness of the people we met and the absence of traffic all made us feel incredibly at home right from the start.
And, on top of this, we were lucky enough to find a super property in a beautiful setting that was perfect for us to live in and to provide, once renovated, the accessible guest accommodation needed for us to offer the inclusive holiday experience that we wanted to. It was also in a great location for offering all the fantastic holiday activities we want to share with our guests.
.and so 6 weeks after our first visit and with some hard work to raise funds, thank you to everyone who has supported us, we had the keys to The Friendly Moose and our new adventure had begun.
The relocation to Sweden, the setting up of a new business and the complete change of lifestyle have certainly provided plenty of challenges, but we are so happy to be living in such a beautiful part of the world, with the amazing contrast between the seasons and can’t wait to be sharing our passion for the North with our guests and creating magical holiday memories.
